Willebord Jan Frans Maria Vandersteen was a Belgian comic book artist, best known for the series Suske and Wiske. In some of his comics he mentions the mythical figure “The Long Waver” or Langewapper in Dutch. Willy grew up in the seefhoek, just like Tourist and Panamarenko, two other Antwerp Giants. His father was a sculptor. At an early age Willy’s drawing talents and fantasy exceeded that of others. His teachers told him drawing wasn’t a job, so he helped his father in the gallery while following evening school at the royal academy for fine arts in Antwerp. During world war II, the Nazi’s prohibited all comic books, so jet again he had tofind another job. Finally in 1944 the famous comic book series “Suske andWiske” was born. Together with Jef Nys he is considerd the cornerstone of Flemish comic books. He was also aquainted with Maria Rosseels. In 1959 they made a journey around the world. Which inspired Willy to write Suske and Wiske the Golden Circle
